T&T interested in Commonwealth Games bid

Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Patrick Manning has expressed an interest in the country staging the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

T&T is one of three countries so far – the others Australia and Nigeria — showing an interest in bidding for the games in nine years. The Australian city of Melbourne staged the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Nigeria’s Abuja lost out to Glasgow (Scotland) for the 2014 Games.

India will host the 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games next year.

Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, made the disclosure about T&T’s interest on Saturday, during a press conference at the International Financial Centre, Port-of-Spain.

Manning’s intentions were made at a Sports Breakfast meeting, in which Kalmadi and dignitaries representing the Commonwealth nations attended at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

“In his (Manning’s) speech, he said he would like to be the host of the Commonwealth Games 2018,” Kalmadi said.

“He made a bid right there in front of all of us,” added Kalmadi.

Manning’s bid came on the heels of T&T’s hosting of the Fifth Summit of the Americas in April and just before the closure of the 21st Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) here this past weekend.

Kalmadi said countries need strong financial backing to successfully bid for the Commonwealth Games.

Asked if T&T would be able to prepare for an event of this magnitude, Kalmadi said, “It depends on your government. If they are ready to come forward or not”.

The 2010 games, which will be held in Delhi India next October, has already cost India’s government US$2 billion.

T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC) general secretary Brian Lewis said that in 2008 they had given some thought to staging the Commonwealth Games.

“Our intention was to engage discussion with Sport Minister Gary Hunt and the government following the Caribbean Games.”

T&T cancelled staging the Caribbean Games earlier this year as a result of the H1N1 virus and scuppered the TTOC’s projections for the bigger assignment.

“The background of a successful Caribbean Games would have given T&T a good argument to be the (Commonwealth) host. If the Prime Minister is of the view it is something he would like to explore, I would think the T&TOC would like to have some discussion with him,” Lewis said.

Government committed to improve civic amenities before Games

The government has strictly instructed civic authorities to cover all manholes and improve civic amenities in the capital ahead of the Commonwealth Games next year, parliament was told Tuesday.Home Minister P. Chidambaram informed the Lok Sabha during question hour that there were about 300,000 manholes in Delhi.'Strict instructions have been issued to the Delhi Jal Board that no manhole is left uncovered and wherever the covers are stolen they should be replaced immediately,' Chidambaram said.

He said in the last four years, eight cases of accidental death by falling into manholes have been reported in the city.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran said in a written reply: 'The government is fully conscious of providing civic amenities, including proper roads, safe manholes, clean drains and proper electric wiring, for the benefit of the citizens.'

'In this regard, a number of steps have been taken by the government of NCT of Delhi, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council to spruce up civic facilities in the National Capital Territory of Delhi before the Commonwealth Games,' he said.

Ramachandran said a direction has been given to the electricity distribution companies to make live-wires on the street light poles underground on all the major roads.

He said funds are being provided to make electric wires underground in some areas where hotels are located and where visitors of Commonwealth Games are likely to stay.

There is a plan to establish a separate round-the-clock toll free number -- 1266 -- to redress complaints relating to civic amenities, he added.

Overhead cables to go underground before Commonwealth Games

All overhead cables in and around Delhi will be moved underground before the Commonwealth Games next year, Home Minister P. Chidambaram said in Lok Sabha Tuesday.

He was answering a question on the capital's dilapidated roads, uncovered manholes, drains and hanging wires.

Chidambaram said the government has instructed the Delhi Jal Board to cover the missing manholes.

He said in the last four years, eight cases of accidental death by falling in manholes have been reported in the city.

Nigeria: Athletics Coaches Protest NSC Negligence

Athletics coaches across the nation have hit hard at the seeming negligence the National Sports Commission NSC has foisted on their sport.

With a tell tale of woes to show for a decade and half of athletics practice, the coaches squarely blamed the NSC for the decline of track and field, which in the past brought countless laurels to Nigeria.

The coaches spoke against the background of stalled preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India and the African Championships in Nairobi Kenya next year.

"We are already months behind in our training schedule. Does it mean that the NSC is not interested in the development of athletics?" Gabriel Opuana fired from Abuja.

He accused the present NSC boss, Sanni Ndanusa, of paying attention only to football much to the detriment of other sports.

"As the president of the Tennis Federation we all thought that he will give attention to other sports. Now we know better and are generally frustrated with lack of funding and policy somersault we are witnessing. Can you image that there is no single document yet on our preparations for the Commonwealth Games, even the athletes training here in Abuja were locked out of the National Stadium?"

Speaking from Ilorin veteran coach Harrison Momoh added that it is time the NSC paid attention to athletics because of its medals prospects at the Olympics.

"We knew what gave us result in the past. But now those things are not there anymore. After the World Championships in Berlin I thought that we would be seriously working towards getting better prepared not just for the Commonwealth Games, but for the Olympics 2012 in London", he said.
