Special arrangement at Metro station for Games

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will make special arrangements at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium metro station during the Commonwealth Games in October. The Corporation has said that from the date of the opening of the Games on October 3, till the closing on October 14, special arrangements will be made for easy access to the station.

“The JLN Stadium metro station will have five entries and exits so that the public can access the station easily. Extra staircases of much wider width are also being provided so that people can easily access the place. The staircase width which is normally 2.4 metre wide in other stations will be as wide as 4.25 metres at the JLN Stadium metro station to accommodate the extra rush,” said a DMRC spokesperson.

There will also be four escalators connecting the concourse with the platform. The JLN Stadium metro station has been designed to cater to 4,000 passengers per minute during peak time and accommodate a total traffic flow of 80,000 passengers per hour with a platform area of 1800 sq. metres.

There will be 20 automatic fare collection gates instead of eight normally provided at most stations keeping in view heavy flow of traffic expected at the stadium.

“The Operations Department of the DMRC is preparing a special plan and procedure for clearance of commuters who will be coming for the opening and closing ceremony by the metro railway with high frequency of trains to ensure very fast clearance at the platform to avoid crowding during the ceremony,” the spokesperson added.

Volunteers and Sahayaks will be posted by the DMRC to assist passengers at all the important point of the station.

“A special control room will be established at the JLN Stadium metro station from where public announcements will be controlled and LED sign-boards would be displayed for guidance of passengers. Railings will be installed for guidance of passengers and extra lighting will be installed inside the station for good visibility ,” the spokesperson said.

Forest Dept. to supply one million potted plants for Games

The Delhi Government's Forest Department will provide one million potted plants for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in the city. In all three to five million potted plants will be required of which the Forest Department will provide one million plants.

Six projects worth Rs.50 crore were sanctioned over the weekend at a meeting of the Expenditure Finance Committee presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Of the six projects, one pertains to the Forest Department and rest to the Public Works Department.

After the meeting, Ms. Dikshit said Delhi would be able to successfully host the Commonwealth Games. The area around the Games venues and roads leading to the venues will have the soothing fragrance of beautiful and colourful flowers during the Games. The committee has approved a proposal of the Forest Department to make available one million potted plants at a cost of around Rs.7.5 crore.

An amount of Rs.16.56 crore has been sanctioned for improvement of footpath at various roads under the PWD. In addition, Rs.7.39 crore has been sanctioned for improvement of footpaths by providing and laying anti-skid multi-coloured inter-locking paver blocks on Ring Road from Raj Ghat to Delhi University.

The committee has sanctioned Rs.9.42 crore for improvement, modification and re-surfacing of various roads under the PWD.

It has also been decided to upgrade and beautify National Highway-1 from Sanjay Gandhi Nagar T-point to Wazirabad Chowk which include up-gradation of central verge, footpath and sign-boards works with a budget of Rs.10.97 crore.

Delhi Metro ready to meet Commonwealth Games rush (Lead)

Delhi Metro Sunday said it was making special arrangements to cater to the huge rush at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games.

The company said the upcoming Delhi Metro station would have five entry and exit points as well as extra staircases of much wider width "so that many people can be accommodated easily".

"We are making special arrangements at the Stadium Metro station from the opening of the Games Oct 3 to the closing ceremony Oct 14," Delhi Metro spokesman Anuj Dayal said.

"The staircase width, which is normally 2.4 metres in other stations, will be as much as 4.25 metres at the Stadium Metro station to accommodate the extra rush. There will also be four escalators connecting the concourse with the platform," he said.

According to Dayal, the station can deal with 4,000 passengers per minute in peak time and has been designed to accommodate a total traffic flow of 80,000 people per hour in the platform area of 1,800 sq. metres.

There will be 20 automatic fare collection (AFC) gates instead of eight AFC gates normally provided at most stations.

"The operations department of DMRC is preparing a special plan and procedure for clearance of commuters who will be coming for the opening and closing ceremony by Metro trains, with high frequency of Metro trains to ensure very fast clearance at the platform to avoid crowding," he said.

"Volunteers and Sahayaks (helpers) will be posted to assist passengers at all important points of the station ," Dayal added.

A special control room will be established at the station to control public announcements.

Delhi Metro will provide easy connectivity to 10 out of 11 venues of the Commonwealth Games. These are the Games Village, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi University, Thyagaraj Complex, Siri Fort Sports Complex, National Stadium, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Talkotora Indoor Stadium, Yamuna Sports Complex and R.K. Tennis Complex.

Aamir Khan, Javed Akhtar to promote Commonwealth Games in New Delhi

Bollywood star Aamir Khan and lyricist Javed Akhtar will be among a host of celebrities promoting the upcoming Commonwealth Games through an audio-visual campaign.

The audio-visual campaign, for which the CWG Organising Committee has tied up with Network 18, will be launched tomorrow and it will have a host of personalities from a variety of fields.

Pledging support for the Games, Khan said, "the CWG is around the corner and we as Indians should do everything possible to make our guests, coming from all over the world, feel welcome and comfortable."

"I wish all Indian sportpersons very best," the actor said.

Akhtar said he wished the country "all the very best" as it is hosting the Games for the first time.

The audio-visual campaign is aimed at building a crescendo for the mega sporting event and sensitise people about doing their best in making the Games a comfortable one for those coming from abroad.

The organisers are tightlipped about the other celebrities participating in the event.

Around 40% workforce at CWG organising committee is female

Women power at the Commonwealth Games organising committee was out in open today as they gathered on the eve of International Women's Day in New Delhi.

Out of around 1,000 employees, a whopping 38.5% are women. Thirty-five senior positions are held by women who come with versatile backgrounds and proven expertise in their respective areas.

Most of the women workforce falls in the age-group of 20-30 years.

A function to mark Women's Day was held at the organising committee office which echoed with laughter, cheers and whistles as the women workforce gathered there.

Enthusiastic women also posed with Shera, the mascot of the Games and Suresh Kalmadi, MP and chairman of the organising
committee Commonwealth Games 2010.

"The specialised and efficient workforce of the organising committee boasts of a strong presence of 38.5% women in all the 34 functional areas of the organisation," a spokesperson said.

The areas included workforce recruitment, communications, image and look, hospitality, venue operations, finance right and security.

Health centre combining allopathy,homeopathy,ayurveda in east Delhi

To spruce up health services in East Delhi area, a hub of the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Delhi government's third health centre, offering allopathic, homeopathic and ayurvedic treatments, was opened today. Inaugurating the three-storeyed Centre, Delhi Finance Minister A K Walia said, ''This centre will have treatment facilities under all three medicine systems of allopathy, homeopathy and Ayurveda under one roof.'' Constructed at a cost of Rs two crore, this is the third Health Centre of Delhi government in east Delhi. The ground floor has room for medical officers, injection and dressing, pharmacy, Directly Observed Treatment-Short Course (DOTS) Centre and store have been constructed whereas the first floor houses a laboratory, family planning and Reproductive and Child Health services, malaria room and vaccine store. ''The centre, a disabled-friendly building, will cater to the needs of families putting up in areas like Bank Enclave, Priyadarshini Vihar, Kishan Kunj, Sarojini Park, Kundan Nagar, Guru Ram Dass Nagar, Khajuri Khas, Laxmi Nagar and Shastri Nagar,'' Dr Walia added. A home for the aged in the area is also on the anvil, he shared.

East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, who was also present on the occasion, said, ''Opening of more health centres will definitely de-congest big hospitals and the residents of the area must avail of its facilities.''

JLN Stadium Metro Stn to cater to 4000 commuters per min in peak hrs

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is making special arrangements at Jawahar Lal Nehru (JLN) Stadium Metro station to ensure commuter convenience during the upcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG) and it will cater to 4000 passengers per minute in peak hours.

''Since the opening of CWG on October 3 and closing on October 14, will take place at this location, we are making special arrangements,'' DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said today.

''The staton will be able to cater to 4000 passengers per minute in peak time and has been designed to accommodate a total traffic flow of 80,000 persons per hour with a platform area of 1800 square metres,'' he added.

Besides, five entries and exits will provide easy accesibility and extra staircases of much wider width are being provided to accomodate more people.

The normal staircase width of 2.4 metres is being increased to 4.25 metres at JLN Stadium Metro station. There will also be four escalators connecting the concourse with the platform and there will be 20 Automatic Fare Collection gates instead of eight AFC gates normally provided at most stations.

Aamir Raza shows at Red Fort, Mehrauli Fort during Commonwealth Games

Gearing up for the Commonwealth Games, government has roped in renowned theatre director Aamir Raza Hussain to stage shows at Red Fort and Quli Khan tomb at Mehrauli.

There will be light and sound shows at Red Fort, Old Fort and Quli Khan tomb at Mehrauli as part of the entertainment and cultural programme during the Games, ITDC director Rajiv Makin told PTI.

Hussain has been given the responsibility for the Red Fort and Mehrauli shows, while a film company has got the award for doing light and sound show at Old Fort.

Titled as Dasatan-e-Dilli, the 45-minute Mehrauli show is about the story of the city of Delhi.

"It is for the first time that such a show is being held at the Mehrauli Fort," said Makin.

While the Old Fort show is about the six cities of Delhi, the Red Fort show will begin from the Shahjahanabad days to Mughal era and then travel through freedom struggle and finally the independence.

Though there is a light and sound show at the Red Fort now, the Hussain show will be totally different from the current one.

The present light and sound show was conceived almost 20 years ago and since then technology has changed a lot. "We are using latest laser technology for the show and this will be entirely different in its presentation," Makin said.

All the shows at Red Fort, Old Fort and Mehrauli will be of 45-minute duration each.

Besides, the tourism ministry is planning more such cultural evenings during the Games. The ministry is also launching a massive publicity campaign popularising the Games to woo tourists during the biggest sporting event in the capital.

"We are participating in the ITB Berlin travel and tourism fare to showcase the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and have taken about 870 sq ft area at the fare for setting up India pavillion. The theme of the pavillion is Commonwealth Games," a senior ministry official said.
